Magical Istanbul Overview

Magical Istanbul is an Arabian Nights slot from Onlyplay, released on 13 June 2024. It uses a scatter pays system: there are no paylines or ways, and a symbol pays when enough copies of it land anywhere on the screen.

SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 95.5%, medium-high volatility, a hit frequency of 33.66% and a maximum win of 5,000x the bet, with stakes from 1 to 50. All figures below come from our demo session at a bet of 50 USD.

A Night Over the Bosphorus

The grid sits in an ornate golden frame under a night sky, with blue-domed mosques and slender minarets on both sides. The game’s demo shows six reels and five rows, 30 positions in total. The symbols mix treasures of the old city – a green turban, a red fez, a drum, a jewelled ring and a green jug – with fruit: grapes, pomegranates, oranges and green apples.

The genie, labelled “Scatter”, is the symbol that unlocks the free spins.

One detail is worth knowing if you compare sources: SlotCatalog describes the layout as 5-3, but the demo we played clearly uses six columns of five symbols. The paytable thresholds of eight or more make sense on the larger grid, where 30 positions leave plenty of room for clusters to form.

How Scatter Pays Work

The paytable on the rules screen is divided into three bands for each regular symbol: 8–9, 10–11 and 12 or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid. Fewer than eight of a kind pay nothing, so the game is about clusters of numbers rather than positions.

The values are multiples of the total bet. The green turban is the top symbol: 8–9 pay 10x, 10–11 pay 25x and 12 or more pay 50x. The fez follows with 2.5x, 10x and 25x, the drum with 2x, 5x and 15x, and the ring with 1.5x, 2x and 12x.

The fruit sits at the bottom. The jug pays 1x, 1.5x and 10x, the grapes 0.8x, 1.2x and 8x, the pomegranate 0.5x, 1x and 5x, the orange 0.4x, 0.9x and 4x, and the green apple 0.25x, 0.75x and 2x.

The Paytable in Cash

At our 50 USD bet the multipliers turn into round numbers. Eight or nine turbans are worth 500 USD, ten or eleven 1,250 USD, and twelve or more 2,500 USD. At the other end, eight or nine green apples return only 12.50 USD, a quarter of the stake.

The spread between the top and the bottom of the table is large. A cluster of twelve turbans pays 25 times as much as a cluster of twelve apples, so the value of any spin depends far more on which symbol forms the group than on how many groups land.

What We Saw on the Reels

The small wins in our session matched the table. A win of 20 USD is exactly the 0.4x band of the orange on a 50 USD bet, and a group of green apples paid 12.50 USD, the 0.25x band. One spin built up a total of 52.50 USD from several groups, and another returned 70 USD (1.4x).

Because the win amount appears right on the grid where the winning symbols were, it is easy to follow which cluster paid what.

The Genie and the Free Spins

The genie scatter pays on its own as well as triggering the bonus. Four genies pay 3x the bet, five pay 5x, and six or more pay 100x.

At our 50 USD stake that means 150 USD for four genies, 250 USD for five and 5,000 USD for six or more, according to the paytable.

The Controls

The control bar runs along the bottom of the frame. The balance, the last win and the bet are shown side by side, and the bet can be changed with the minus and plus buttons on either side of it. A large red button on the right spins the grid, with a MAX BET button below it that jumps straight to the top stake. An information button and the menu sit in the bottom-left corner, and the sound and autoplay controls are on the right-hand edge.

The bet range runs from 1 to 50, and our session was played at the top of it. At that level the published 5,000x maximum would be worth 250,000 USD.

The Numbers to Keep in Mind

An RTP of 95.5% is a little below the market average of around 96%, and the medium-high volatility means results come unevenly. A hit frequency of 33.66% works out at a win on roughly one spin in three.
