Golden Octopus Overview

Golden Octopus is an underwater slot from Onlyplay, released on 11 July 2024. It plays on a 6x6 grid with cluster pays and cascading wins, and the published figures are an RTP of 95.35%, high volatility and a maximum win of 10,180x the bet. Stakes run from $1 to $50 per spin.

A Coral Reef in Candy Colours

The grid sits in a bright blue lagoon framed by coral and swaying plants, with the game’s title running down the left side in gold letters. Everything is drawn in a soft, cartoon style: the sea creatures have big eyes and rounded shapes, and wins are shown in large pale-blue numbers across the middle of the grid.

The six paying symbols are a green sea turtle, a purple jellyfish, an orange clownfish, a red seahorse, a green coral and a blue bubble. The octopus of the title appears as a golden WILD that takes up two positions side by side.

The Paytable

Symbols pay when enough of them land together, from five up to nine or more, and every value is a multiple of the bet:

• Turtle: 0.5x for 5, 1.5x for 6, 3x for 7, 10x for 8 and 50x for 9 or more.
• Jellyfish: 0.4x, 1x, 2.5x, 6x and 25x.
• Clownfish: 0.3x, 0.8x, 1.5x, 4x and 15x.
• Seahorse: 0.2x, 0.5x, 1x, 3x and 10x.
• Coral: 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.8x, 2x and 6x.
• Bubble: 0.1x, 0.3x, 0.6x, 1x and 3x.

The jump from eight to nine symbols is steep for every symbol – the turtle goes from 10x to 50x – so the larger clusters built by cascades are where the base game earns its money. At a 50 USD bet, nine or more turtles are worth 2,500 USD.

Cascades in the Base Game

Winning symbols are removed and new ones drop into the gaps, so one spin can pay several times. Our base-game captures show wins of 40.00 USD and 75.00 USD on the 50 USD bet, with smaller cascade steps of 25 USD recorded as the last win along the way. That is typical of a cluster game at this volatility: frequent small returns, with the real potential held back for the bonus.

The Energy Meter

On the right of the grid stands a glass tube hung with three fishing floats, labelled FREE SPINS at the top. It fills with yellow energy during play, and in one of our captures bolts of lightning shot from the tube across the grid and struck several symbols. The Speed Up Bonus

Below the porthole is a Speed Up BONUS button with two options, both priced for the current bet:

Free Spins with a Growing Multiplier

The feature opens with the message “You won 10 free spins – magnify your free spin win by up to x100 multiplier”. During the round the tube on the right turns into a multiplier gauge, and a note beside it repeats that the multiplier can be increased up to x100.

In our round the gauge showed x2 while two golden octopus wilds sat side by side in the top row, and that spin displayed a win of 150.00 USD. The x100 ceiling and the cascades together explain how the game reaches its 10,180x maximum.

The two prices tell you how the game values its features. The Fish Booster costs 25x the bet and the free spins 37x, so the free spins round is the more expensive of the two by about half. At 50 USD that is the difference between 1,250 USD and 1,850 USD per purchase.

To earn back a 37x buy, the round needs something like a nine-turtle cluster (50x) or a chain of smaller clusters under the multiplier. With the multiplier able to climb to x100, a single strong cascade late in the round can outweigh everything that came before – but a round that stays at x2 will usually fall short of its price.

Controls and Layout

The control bar below the grid shows the balance, the last win and the bet, with plus and minus buttons for the stake. What the Session Did

Across our captures the balance moved from 9,575 USD down to 6,570 USD, a drop that includes the 1,850 USD spent on the free spins buy. That is a fair picture of a high-volatility cluster game: the base game returns small amounts often, and the bought feature has to land a strong multiplier to pay back its price.

The Numbers to Keep in Mind

A 95.35% return is a little below the market average of around 96%. Against that, the 10,180x maximum win is high, and it comes from multiplied cascades in the free spins rather than from any single symbol – the best cluster in the paytable pays 50x.
