Three Musketeers

Three Musketeers Overview

Three Musketeers is a 5x3 video slot from SimplePlay, released on 28 November 2020. It pays on 243 ways, so matching symbols only need to land on adjacent reels, in any position, to form a win. SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 95.12%, high volatility and a maximum win of 500x the stake.

The story comes from Alexandre Dumas: three swordsmen in red, white and blue, a treasure-filled Paris and a free spins round in which you choose which musketeer rides with you. On top of that, three jackpots – Major, Minor and Mini – are shown in the top right corner throughout the game.

Paris Rooftops and Golden Frames

The reels stand in an ornate gold frame over a painted view of Paris, with church domes and tiled roofs stretching into the distance. The logo hangs above the reels like a tavern sign, and a 243 WAYS plaque sits on both sides of the grid.

The premium symbols are the three musketeers themselves, followed by a jewelled crown, a plumed helmet and a pair of flintlock pistols. A sack of gold coins also appears on the reels, and the low end is filled by the classic card ranks A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9, drawn in bold red, gold and blue letters.

How the Bet Works

The game rules explain that every spin costs 50 times the coin value times the chosen bet. In our session the coin was 0.01 and the bet level 10, which gave a total bet of 5.00. All paytable values are given in coins and multiplied by the coin value and the bet.

Only the highest win on each symbol combination is paid, and wins on different symbols are added together. With 243 ways, a single spin can pay the same symbol several times over when it appears on more than one row of the same reel.

The Paytable

The musketeer in the red coat and the long-haired one in the teal coat are the top symbols, paying 500 coins for five, 250 for four and 50 for three. The armoured musketeer and the crown follow at 300 coins for five, the helmet at 250, while the pistols pay 250 for five of a kind.

Among the card ranks, A and K pay 200 coins for five, Q and J pay 150, and 10 and 9 pay 100. At our 5.00 stake, five top musketeers on one way would return 50.00 – ten times the bet – before any other ways are added.

Scatter Shields and the Free Spins

The scatter is a golden shield with crossed swords. When three of them landed in our session, the game announced a scatter game and opened a selection screen with the three musketeers standing side by side. Each one gives a different free spins package:

– the red musketeer: reel 2 is wild, 6 free spins
– the white musketeer: reel 3 is wild, 9 free spins
– the blue musketeer: reel 4 is wild, 12 free spins

SlotCatalog describes these as sticky reel wilds and notes that extra free spins can be won during the round. The choice is a trade-off: the red option gives the fewest spins but places the wild reel early, where it helps short ways; the blue option gives twice as many spins with the wild reel further along.

Our Free Spins Round

In our round the wild stood on reel 3 – the white musketeer’s option – as a single tall figure covering the whole reel. The ways counter on the side of the grid changed from 243 to 324 while the feature was running, and one of our wins was shown as 3.50 (X4) in the message bar, so a win multiplier was also in play.

At that point the win field had reached 128.00 on the 5.00 stake – just over 25 times the bet. That was the biggest result of our session and shows how much the fixed wild reel does for a 243-ways game.

Base Game Results

Outside the bonus the wins were steady rather than large. We saw spins paying 5.00 for a combination with the gold sack, 27.00 from stacked red musketeers, 30.00 from a screen full of the armoured musketeer and 50.00 from red musketeers spread over four reels – ten times the stake.

The jackpot panel showed Major 139,541, Minor 2,947 and Mini 322 during our session. The amounts did not change while we played, and the game did not show how the jackpots are won, so we can only report that they are present.

Choosing a Musketeer

The three packages all start from the same trigger, so the choice mostly changes the shape of the round. Six spins with a wild second reel mean fewer chances, but every way that starts on reel 1 only needs matching symbols on reels 1 and 3 to reach three of a kind. Twelve spins with a wild fourth reel give the longest round, and the wild then helps turn three-of-a-kind hits into four or five of a kind.

The middle option – nine spins with the wild in the centre – is the one we saw in action. It sits halfway between the two, and in our round it was enough to push the total past 25 times the stake. None of the three is marked as better in the game, so it is a matter of taste: short and punchy, balanced, or long and patient.

Who Will Enjoy It

This slot suits players who like historical adventure themes and a free spins round with a clear choice at the start. The 243-ways layout keeps the base game simple – there are no lines to follow – while the wild reel and the win multiplier give the bonus its punch. Players who prefer steady low-risk sessions should keep the high volatility rating in mind.

SlotCatalog notes that Three Musketeers is built on HTML5 and JavaScript, so it runs in the browser on desktop computers, tablets and phones without a download. The controls stay the same on every screen: the coin value and the bet level sit at the bottom left, the win field in the centre, and the Max Bet, spin and Auto Play buttons on the right.

Our Verdict

Three Musketeers is a tidy, easy-to-read ways slot with an attractive theme. Its high volatility and 95.12% RTP mean the free spins round carries most of the value, and the musketeer choice gives you a real decision to make each time it triggers.
