Chang Thai Overview

Chang Thai is a jungle-themed video slot from SimplePlay, released on 25 December 2020. It uses 5 reels, 4 rows and 50 paylines, and SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 95.24%, medium volatility and a maximum win of 35,540x the stake.

“Chang” is the Thai word for elephant, and the elephant is the star of the game: it stands beside the reels in a purple and gold harness and pays the most on the paytable. The bonus is a free spins round in which you choose between fewer spins with more wilds or more spins with fewer. Three jackpots – Major, Minor and Mini – are shown in the top right corner.

A Temple in the Jungle

The reels sit in a gold frame decorated like a Thai temple roof, set against a green rainforest with waterfalls and an old stone stupa in the background. The gold and green logo carries a small elephant figure on top.

The symbols are the animals of the jungle: the elephant, a tiger, a black bear, a crocodile and a monkey. The card ranks A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 complete the set, while jewelled eggs and a pink lotus flower play the special roles.

Paylines and Bets

All symbols pay left to right from the leftmost reel, and only the highest win on each line is paid. Wins are multiplied by the line bet and the coin, except for the scatter, whose wins are added to the line wins and pay anywhere in view. The rules screen shows all 50 fixed lines.

In our session the coin was 0.01 and the line bet 10, which made a total bet of 5.00. SlotCatalog lists a bet range of $2.50 to $25.00 per spin.

The Paytable

The elephant pays 1,000 coins for five, 200 for four, 40 for three and 10 for just two. The tiger and the bear pay 500 for five and also pay from two symbols. The crocodile and the monkey pay 400 for five.

Among the card ranks, A and K pay 400 coins for five, and Q, J, 10 and 9 pay 200. At our stake, five elephants on a line would pay 100.00 – twenty times the total bet – and with four rows the elephant often arrives stacked, so several lines can connect at once.

A detail worth noting on the paytable is that the three biggest animals – the elephant, tiger and bear – pay for just two symbols on a line. The elephant returns 10 coins for two, the tiger and the bear 4 coins each. These are small amounts, but with 50 lines and four rows they turn up often and soften the dry spells between larger hits.

The crocodile, the monkey and all the card ranks need at least three symbols. The A and K pay as much as the crocodile and the monkey for five, which is unusual: in many slots the card ranks pay far less than the animals.

Base Game Wins

Our first recorded spin paid 9.00 from a mix of small line wins. Later a stack of elephants on the first two reels, supported by more elephants further along, produced 31.00 – over six times the stake. In another spin, line 49 paid 40.00 for four Ks, and the spin as a whole returned 84.00, almost seventeen times the bet.

Lotus Scatters and the Free Spins Choice

The scatter is a pink lotus with a red jewel at its heart. When three of them landed on the first three reels in our session, the message bar asked us to press “SPIN” to enter the feature game, and the scatter win of 10.00 was added to the spin.

The feature opens with a choice between three jewelled eggs, each with its own package:

– the red egg: 188 wilds, 4 free spins
– the gold egg: 128 wilds, 7 free spins
– the green egg: 88 wilds, 10 free spins

The wild count falls as the number of spins grows: the red egg gives 188 wilds over 4 spins, the gold egg 128 over 7, and the green egg 88 over 10. The shorter rounds put much more wild power into each spin, which suits players chasing a big hit; the longer round gives more chances with a smaller boost on each one.

Our Free Spins Round

We played the 7-spin option. By the sixth spin two whole reels in the middle of the grid were filled with golden egg wilds, and a basket of tropical fruit had appeared beside the elephant. The round total at that point was 252.00 – more than 50 times our 5.00 stake – with one spin still to go.

The spin counter in the top left corner showed Free Spins 6/7, and the reels kept the same animals and card ranks as in the base game, so the extra value came entirely from the wilds. With reels 3 and 4 fully wild, any matching symbols on the first two reels were carried through to four of a kind, which is how a modest line bet grew into a result worth more than fifty stakes.

Jackpots, Desktop and Mobile

The jackpot panel showed Major 139,541, Minor 2,946 and Mini 321 throughout our session – the same Major value as in other SimplePlay slots we tested, which suggests a jackpot shared across the studio’s games. The game did not show us how the jackpots are won, so we simply report that they are there.

Our Verdict

Chang Thai is a straightforward 50-line slot with a colourful jungle setting and a clear bonus choice. The two-symbol wins for the elephant, tiger and bear keep the base game ticking, and the wild-filled free spins produced the best results in our session.
