Double Steam Overview

Double Steam is a steampunk video slot from Platipus, released on 26 August 2024. It runs on 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 fixed paylines, and SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 95%, medium volatility and a maximum win of 2,552x the bet, with bets from 0.20 to 20.

The game has wilds, multiplier symbols, a free spins round with all wins tripled and a Buy Feature. The figures below come from our own demo session, played at a total bet of $100 – a line bet of $5.

A Workshop Full of Machines

The reels sit in a brass frame inside a dark, green-lit factory hall, with pipes and gears in the background. The symbols are a gallery of Victorian machinery: a clockwork cat in goggles, a mechanical bee, a glowing purple plasma orb, brass flying goggles, a steam-powered glove and a leather top hat. The low symbols are the card ranks from 10 to A, each set in a small cog and each in its own colour: a red A, a blue K, a green Q, a purple J and a gold 10.

The art is detailed rather than busy. The machine symbols are drawn with brass rivets, glass lenses and glowing parts, and the grid stays readable even when the multiplier symbols light up on top of it.

The gentleman in the top hat is the wild. In our captures he appeared in several positions at once, including a diagonal across three reels.

The Paytable

Payouts are multiplied by the bet per line, pay from left to right, and only the highest win on each line counts. The top of the table is shared by two symbols:

At our $5 line bet, five cats or five bees pay $3,750, which is 37.5x the total bet. Only the cat, the bee and the 10 pay for two of a kind.

What the Paytable Means at $100

At a $5 line bet the table converts directly into money. Five plasma orbs pay $2,000 (20x the total bet), five goggles or five gloves $1,250 (12.5x), five top hats $625 and five of any card rank $500 (5x). Three of a kind is where most base-game wins come from: $75 for three orbs, $50 for three goggles, gloves or hats, and $25 for three cards.

The spread is wide. The two top symbols pay seven and a half times as much as the cards for five of a kind, but only five times as much for three, so the difference between a good and an ordinary spin lies mostly in reaching the fourth and fifth reels.

The x2 Symbols

Orange gear symbols marked x2 land on the reels in both the base game and the free spins. They sat on the grid in two of our better base-game spins, which paid $360 and $610. The screens do not show exactly how the multiplier was applied to each line, so we give the totals as the game reported them.

Free Spins and the Buy Feature

The Feature Buy button sits to the right of the reels. At a $100 bet, Buy Free Spins cost $6,000, which is 60x the stake. The round that followed awarded 15 free spins with all wins x3, marked by a badge in the top-left corner during the round.

The tripling applies to every win in the round, so the paytable grows with it: five cats or bees would pay $11,250 during free spins at our stake, which is 112.5x the total bet, and five plasma orbs $6,000 – exactly the price of the buy.

The buy screen is a simple confirmation panel showing the price, and the balance in our session dropped from $7,270 to $1,270 the moment we accepted. A round gear-and-clock symbol also appeared on the outer reels in the free spins; the screens we captured do not show its role, so we do not assign it one.

How Our Round Played Out

The spin that led into the feature paid $500, with the top-hatted wild spread across the reels. In the free spins a $900 win arrived with 13 spins left, taking the total to $1,550, and the final spin added $750 with two x2 symbols on the grid.

The round ended at $4,370 – about 43.7x the stake, and less than the $6,000 we paid. That is a fair illustration of a medium-volatility buy: it guarantees the feature, not the profit.

The Session in Numbers

Before the buy, our base-game captures showed a balance of $7,470 after the $360 spin and $8,180 after the $610 spin, and $7,270 at the moment we opened the buy panel. After paying for the feature the balance stood at $1,270 for the whole round, since the game adds the free spins total only when the round ends.

The individual free spin wins already include the tripling. The $900 hit, for example, was a $300 line result before the x3 applied, and the round total of $4,370 includes the $500 from the spin that led into the feature.

Numbers to Keep in Mind

A 95% RTP is a little below the market average of around 96%. The 2,552x ceiling is moderate for a 20-line game, and the paytable explains why: the best single line is 750x the line bet, so the big results depend on the tripled free spins and the x2 symbols stacking up.
