How we rate games

Every slot is scored on the same four criteria, using the game's published data: RTP (40%), maximum win potential (25%), bonus features described in our review (30%) and how recent the release is (5%). Our editors can adjust a score after playing the game. Missing data counts as neutral. The score reflects the game's numbers and features, not your chances of winning; slots are games of chance, so please play responsibly.

Three Kingdoms Overview

Three Kingdoms is a 5-reel, 3-row video slot from Funta Gaming, released on 17 May 2023 according to SlotCatalog. It is set in the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, when the states of Wei, Wu and Shu fought for control of China. The game plays on 20 paylines. Funta’s own game page lists an RTP of 96.30%, medium volatility, a hit frequency of 22% and a maximum win of 2,000x the bet.

The History Behind the Theme

The Three Kingdoms period followed the fall of the Han dynasty. From 220 to 280 AD, Cao Wei in the north, Shu Han in the southwest and Eastern Wu in the southeast each claimed the right to rule China. The era became famous through the 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and it still inspires films, TV series and video games. The slot takes its colours from that story: each kingdom has its own banner, and the generals on the reels wear matching colours.

Theme and Graphics

The reels sit inside a red and gold frame topped by two golden dragons. Behind it is a battlefield with a fortress wall, broken stakes and arrows in the ground. When the free game starts, the cloudy sky turns fiery red. 20 LINES markers stand on both sides of the grid, and the control column on the right holds the bet, spin, autoplay and turbo buttons.

Symbols

The top symbols are three generals in armour, dressed in red, green and purple. Next come the three kingdom banners, marked with the characters of Shu (green), Wu (red) and Wei (blue), and a golden dragon imperial seal. Royals such as K and Q fill the low end. The wild is a red money bag tied with a green cord, and it substitutes for the regular symbols.

Free Game

Three Kingdoms has a Free Game round, which opens with a scroll banner. A counter at the top of the screen tracks the remaining free spins. Funta lists multipliers as a feature of the game, and SlotCatalog lists free spins and the wild.

What the Numbers Mean

A hit frequency of 22% means that roughly one spin in four and a half pays something. Medium volatility means wins come at a moderate pace, and neither tiny nor huge wins dominate. The 2,000x cap equals $10,000 at the $5 stake we played. An RTP of 96.30% is a long-run average over a very large number of spins, so a single session can land far above or below it.

Our Session

  • At a $5 bet, a base-game spin with four wild bags on the bottom row gave a Mega Win of $807, more than 160x the stake.
  • On the last free spin, wild bags filled most of the grid and the spin paid $474.50.
  • A spin that started the Free Game paid $5, the same as the stake.
