How we rate games

Every slot is scored on the same four criteria, using the game's published data: RTP (40%), maximum win potential (25%), bonus features described in our review (30%) and how recent the release is (5%). Our editors can adjust a score after playing the game. Missing data counts as neutral. The score reflects the game's numbers and features, not your chances of winning; slots are games of chance, so please play responsibly.

The Grim Reaper Overview

The Grim Reaper is a gothic horror slot from Quickspin, released on 7 October 2025, just in time for the Halloween season. It plays on 5 reels and 3 rows with 10 paylines, and its features all revolve around one idea: the Wild doubles as the Reaper and collects the Soul symbols on the screen.

The theoretical payout is 96.10%, or 96.37% with the Extra Bet active. The volatility is medium-high, the hit frequency is listed at 20.84%, bets run from 0.10 to 100 and the maximum win is 5,360x the bet. On top of the base-game Soul Respins, there are three free-spin modes – The Gathering, Raise the Souls and Reaper Harvest – and a three-level Buy Feature.

Theme and Graphics

The setting is pure gothic Halloween: a graveyard at night, skulls, potions, bells and a fiery, dark atmosphere, with the hooded Reaper himself as the star. The theme is not just decoration here, because the game mechanics follow the story – the Reaper harvests souls, the souls carry the prize values, and the stronger free-spin modes literally “raise the souls” onto the reels.

How the Game Pays

Regular wins are paid on 10 lines from left to right. The Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Bonus symbol and appears on all reels. The Soul symbol is a normal paying symbol of the paytable, but it also carries a value. Souls come in three different sizes, each linked to multiplier values among 1x, 3x, 5x, 8x, 10x, 15x and 25x – the bigger the soul, the bigger the value.

Soul Respins

Landing a wild together with a Soul symbol triggers the Soul Respins. The wild and the souls lock in place while the other positions respin. Any new wilds and souls that land are kept as well, and the cycle continues until a respin brings no new souls. No line wins are evaluated during the respins. In the base game this feature activates randomly; in the free spins it is guaranteed whenever a wild and a soul are on the screen.

Soul Collection

After the respins (if there were any), the Soul Collection takes place. Every wild on the screen acts as a Reaper and catches all the souls on the same screen, and the values on the souls are added to the total win for that spin. Because each wild collects every soul, two or three wilds on the screen multiply the effect of a soul-heavy grid – this is where the game’s bigger wins come from.

Free Spins: Three Modes

Three or more Bonus symbols anywhere on the screen start the free spins, and the number of scatters decides which mode you get:

  • 3 Bonus symbols: 7 free spins with The Gathering,
  • 4 Bonus symbols: 8 free spins with Raise the Souls,
  • 5 Bonus symbols: 9 free spins with Reaper Harvest.

The free spins cannot be retriggered, and each mode includes the features of the previous ones. A meter above the reels counts every new wild that lands. At the 6th and 12th wild, one extra free spin is added and the round upgrades to the next mode.

The Gathering, Raise the Souls and Reaper Harvest

The Gathering is the entry mode: any wild and soul on the screen together guarantee the Soul Respins and a Soul Collection afterwards. Collecting 6 wilds moves you up to Raise the Souls with 1 extra spin, and 12 wilds take you to Reaper Harvest with another extra spin.

Raise the Souls adds a new trick: when one or more wilds land without any souls, a swarm of souls replaces some random symbols with Soul symbols, so the wild still has something to collect. Collecting 6 more wilds upgrades the round to Reaper Harvest.

Reaper Harvest is the top mode. Every new wild that lands becomes sticky for the rest of the free spins, so the number of Reapers on the reels only grows, and every one of them collects all the souls on every spin.

The 5,360x Maximum Win

The maximum win is 5,360x the bet. Realistically it needs the Reaper Harvest mode, with several sticky wilds collecting large souls on the same spins.

Buy Feature

In the base game, three Buy Feature options are offered:

  • 45x the bet for the free spins with at least 3 Bonus symbols (RTP 96.61%),
  • 100x the bet for at least 4 Bonus symbols (RTP 96.59%),
  • 250x the bet for 5 Bonus symbols, which triggers Reaper Harvest directly (RTP 96.50%).

Not every buy level is available in every market.

Extra Bet

For 2x your bet, the Extra Bet makes Soul symbols and respins more likely: according to the game rules, it increases the chance of the Soul Collection by 221% and of the Soul Respins by 228%. It can only be activated in the base game, it cannot be combined with the Buy Feature, and it may not be available in all markets.

How to Play The Grim Reaper

The game rules sum it up in three steps: choose your total bet, press the spin button, and check the WIN field for the result. The controls follow Quickspin’s standard layout – the spin, autoplay and bet buttons sit on the right, while the left-hand panel holds the sound switch, the game rules, the paytable information, your game history and the settings. The Extra Bet and the Buy Feature are both switched on from the base game – but never both at the same time.

RTP and Volatility

The 96.10% base RTP (96.37% with Extra Bet) is in line with Quickspin’s recent releases. Medium-high volatility means the base game gives regular small wins and the occasional random Soul Respin, while the real upside sits in the free spins – particularly the upgraded modes.

Who Should Play It

The Grim Reaper is a good pick for players who like collector mechanics and progressive free spins. The meter gives every bonus round a clear goal, and watching the round climb from The Gathering to Reaper Harvest is the game’s main thrill. Try the free demo to see how often the souls and wilds meet before playing for real money.
