Magic Gate Overview

Magic Gate is an Asian-themed video slot from Red Tiger, released on 13 April 2016. It plays on 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 paylines, and according to Red Tiger’s official game page it has an RTP of 96.11%, a hit frequency of 26.58% and a maximum payout of 1,216 times the bet. SlotCatalog rates the volatility as medium.

The game is set in the Temple of the Magic Gate. When the temple starts to shake, one of the special features is on its way, and the bonus rounds are built around the temple’s two great doors and their guardians. The free demo above runs on Red Tiger’s own launcher, so you can try it without registration.

Inside the Temple

The reels sit inside a red and gold temple gate, with lacquered pillars on either side and the Magic Gate title glowing in gold on a carved sign above. The symbol backgrounds are pale cream, which makes the gold and red icons stand out clearly, and the whole design has the polished, slightly theatrical look typical of Red Tiger’s early releases.

The premium symbols are Chinese good-luck charms: a golden coin, a gold ingot, a heart-shaped amulet and a red Magic Win knot. The lower-paying symbols are the letters A, K, Q, J and 10, painted in brush-stroke style in red, purple and violet. The Wild is a golden dragon.

How the Paylines Work

The rules state that all symbols pay from left to right on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. The 20 win lines are shown on the last page of the paytable and include straight rows, V shapes and zigzags. Red Tiger lists a betting range of €0.10 to €50.00 per spin, and our screenshots were taken at a £2.00 stake.

A simple line win looks like our first screenshot: three purple Q symbols on a zigzag line paid £4.00, or twice the stake. The dragon Wild tops the paytable, followed by the Magic Win knot and the golden coin, and a screen full of golden coins – as in one of our spins, where the coins connected on many lines at once – is where the base game gets lively.

Controls

The control bar is kept simple. The stake is shown on the left, next to an Auto button for autoplay, the win amount appears in large gold figures in the middle, and a round golden spin button with a Turbo switch sits on the right. The paytable opens as a four-page information screen that includes the symbol values and the 20 win lines, and a big red Play button takes you back to the reels.

Dragon Ball Random Wilds

The Dragon Ball symbol awards random wilds, which drop in across the reels as glowing golden balls marked WILD. In one of our spins four of these wild balls landed on the second, third and fifth reels, turning a quiet spin into a win on several lines. Because the wilds are placed at random, the feature can arrive at any point in the base game.

The Golden Bell Bonus

Two Bonus symbols together with one Golden Bell symbol award the Golden Bell Bonus, an instant-win feature. In our screenshot the game first asked us to “pick a golden coin and win a bonus”, with the coins lying on the reels between the two red Bonus tiles and the Golden Bell on the fifth reel.

The bonus then moves to the temple stage, where the two armoured guardians stand on either side of a huge silver and gold bell. According to Red Tiger, you pick a hammer to ring the bell for win multipliers, and finding the gold hammer leads to the biggest wins. Our bell showed a 12x multiplier.

Free Spins Behind the Gates

Two Bonus symbols plus one Free Spins symbol award the Free Spins Bonus. The round starts in front of the closed temple doors, where the two guardians – one in purple, one in green – each hold a “pick me” choice. Behind the doors the free spins are revealed, and in our session the total came to 11 free spins.

A second pick followed on a screen of three golden Chinese characters with the instruction “pick one”, while the counter at the top showed 10 free spins. Red Tiger’s description promises extra Magic Gate features during the free spins, and when the gates slam shut they lock in the big wins.

Features at a Glance

  • Random Wilds – the Dragon Ball symbol drops wilds across the reels
  • Golden Bell Bonus – 2 Bonus symbols + 1 Golden Bell; ring the bell for win multipliers
  • Free Spins Bonus – 2 Bonus symbols + 1 Free Spins symbol; picks behind the temple doors
  • Dragon Wild – substitutes on the reels and is the top-paying symbol

The design of the triggers is worth noting: both bonus rounds need two Bonus symbols, and the third symbol decides which one you get. Every time two red Bonus tiles land, the next reel becomes the moment of truth, and the Golden Bell or the Free Spins symbol settles which feature follows.

The Numbers in Context

A hit frequency of 26.58% means that, on average, a little more than one spin in four returns a win. Combined with the moderate top prize of 1,216 times the bet, it points to a game that pays regularly rather than saving everything for rare, huge hits. At Red Tiger’s maximum stake of €50, the top payout would be worth €60,800.

Some of the figures differ between sources. SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 95.18%, a release year of 2017 and a betting range of 0.20 to 80, and it also notes that the game exists in several RTP versions. We have used the numbers from Red Tiger’s own game page, but the version at a particular casino can differ, so it is worth checking the information screen before you play for real money.

Who Will Enjoy It

Magic Gate is a good fit for players who like classic 20-line slots with plenty of small features rather than one big mechanic. Random wilds, an instant-win bell bonus and free spins with picks keep the gameplay varied, while the maximum win of 1,216 times the bet shows that the game is built for steady entertainment rather than huge jackpots.

Our Verdict

An attractive, well-structured Red Tiger classic that has aged well. The 96.11% RTP is solid, the hit frequency of just over one spin in four keeps the balance ticking, and the three different features give the temple theme real depth. If you prefer high-volatility slots with five-figure multipliers, look elsewhere; if you want a varied and relaxed session, the gates are worth opening.
