Fafnir's Key Overview

Fafnir's Key is a six-reel, four-row slot from Platipus with 4,096 ways, a 96.15% RTP, a high volatility rating and a published ceiling of 11,709x. It was released on 7 March 2025.

All figures below were read from demo play at a $100.00 total bet. The footer states the format on every spin: PLAY 4096 WAYS.

A Dragon on a Hoard

The reels stand in a cave mouth with a red dragon curled up on a mound of gold to the left of them, and stalactites overhead. The frame is carved gold, and the whole scene is lit warm against the dark.

The symbols are the hoard itself: a golden helmet, a jewelled ring, a dagger, a blue gemstone and card ranks from 9 to A.

The Paytable Is in Multipliers – and Pays From Two

Platipus quotes the table as multipliers rather than cash, which makes it instantly readable. The helmet and the ring are tied at the top: 25 for six, 20 for five, 15 for four, 10 for three and 5 for two.

Below them the dagger and the gem pay 20, 15, 12, 8 and 2. The card ranks pay 15 for six, 12 for five and 10 for four.

Two things stand out. First, everything pays from two of a kind – on a 4,096-ways game that means almost every spin returns something. Second, the spread is remarkably flat: the best symbol is worth 25 and the cheapest 15, so the top of the table is less than twice the bottom.

That is a deliberate choice. A ways game that pays from two needs tiny individual values, and the interest has to come from somewhere else.

The Dragon Doubles

Where it comes from is a dragon’s head carrying x2, which lands on the reels and doubles the spin. Three of the captured wins have it on screen.

With the x2 in play the results were $220.00 (2.2x), $360.00 (3.6x) and $600.00 (6x) at the $100.00 stake. Without it, a full grid of helmets and rings paid $300.00 (3x) and a coin spin paid exactly the stake back.

So the dragon is not a game-changer on its own – it doubles small numbers. Its value is in what it does to a good spin late in a round.

One capture shows the flat table working in the player’s favour: three helmets stacked on the second reel with more across the grid, paying $600.00 on the $100.00 bet. Six of a kind is worth 25, but a grid full of two- and three-symbol hits on 4,096 ways adds up to the same place.

Three Jackpots Above the Reels

The rail carries three pots rather than the usual four: MINOR 25,000, MAJOR 250,000 and MINI 2,500. At the $100.00 stake those are 250x, 2,500x and 25x.

Note the shape: the MAJOR is ten times the MINOR and a hundred times the MINI. And even the MAJOR at 2,500x is less than a quarter of the published 11,709x ceiling, so the jackpots are not the top of this game either.

Gold coins carrying numbers – a 50 in one capture – land among the symbols, which is the usual way a game of this kind feeds a jackpot collection.

Choose Your Feature

The best screen on the game is the one that opens the round. A panel headed CHOOSE YOUR FEATURE offers two banners side by side: 2 RESPINS on the left and 8 FREE SPINS on the right.

That is a real decision rather than a cosmetic one. Two respins hold the current grid and try to improve it; eight free spins start again with the dragon multiplier in play. On a game that pays from two of a kind, a good grid is worth holding – and a poor one is worth leaving.

Very few slots hand the choice to the player at the door. This one does, and it states both numbers plainly before you pick.

The Round Extends Itself

A badge in the top-left corner tracks it: FREE SPINS 2, then 3, then 5. And a banner across the reels explains the jumps – +5 FREE SPINS in green lettering.

The running total climbs alongside: $460.00, then $1,140.00, then $1,360.00 – and by the last capture of the round it reads $9,470.00.

Against the $100.00 stake that is 94.7x from a round that began as a choice between two respins and eight free spins. The dragon doubling small wins across an extended round is exactly how it got there.

The balance sat at $3,960.00 throughout the round and $7,980.00 in the base-game capture, so the session covers two separate runs.

What That Means for the Ceiling

Put the pieces together: a paytable topping out at 25, a x2 dragon, and a round worth 94.7x in these captures. The 11,709x ceiling therefore needs a great many simultaneous ways, multiplied repeatedly, in a long round.

It is the same arithmetic as every 4,096-ways game: the individual numbers are small on purpose, and only quantity gets you anywhere.

Worth noting for anyone comparing Platipus titles: the jackpot figures sit in the same three plates on every game in this batch, and they are quoted in cash rather than multiples – so the conversion has to be done against whatever stake you are playing.

The Interface

Platipus keeps it clean: a BALANCE field bottom-left, TOTAL BET bottom-right, a large win plate across the middle of the reels, and a HOLD FOR TURBO ring beside the spin key. A bet number is printed in the top-left corner of every capture, which is useful for checking a session afterwards.

The menu holds three items only – Paytable, Info and Sound – and the paytable itself is a plain list of symbols with their five bands.

Who Should Play It

Fafnir's Key is for players who want a busy ways game where almost every spin pays something. Paying from two of a kind on 4,096 ways keeps the reels alive, the dragon x2 is easy to read, and the artwork is warm rather than the usual gloomy cave.

The reservations are the flatness of the table – 25 at the top against 15 at the bottom – and a MAJOR jackpot worth a quarter of the ceiling. Without a long free-spins run, this game moves very slowly – though the captured round showing 94.7x proves the engine can deliver when the retriggers arrive.

One note on the name: our library listed this as Farnir's Key. The game’s own title bar, its demo address and all six partner casinos carry it as Fafnir's Key – after the dragon of Norse legend – which is the spelling we now use.
