Shark Bait Overview

Shark Bait is a cluster-pays slot on a 7x7 grid, developed by Hungry Bear Gaming and distributed through Yggdrasil. It was released on 25 February 2025, and SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 94%, high volatility and a maximum win of 3,000x the bet. Bets run from 0.20 to 30.

The figures below come from our own session, played at a bet of €80, and from the game’s paytable screen, which lists every prize as a multiple of the total bet.

Down on the Sea Floor

The grid sits in deep blue water, with coral and sea plants along the bottom and a beam of light coming down from the surface. The sea creatures are cartoon characters: a grinning shark, a purple octopus, a green fish and an orange crab. The lower symbols are the letters A, K and Q, a green boot and a white crystal.

To the left of the grid, a small cage-shaped panel lists the latest wins, showing the symbol, the cluster size and the prize, so you can follow a cascade chain step by step. When a feature starts, the whole scene turns from blue to red.

How Cluster Pays Works Here

There are no paylines. A win needs a cluster of at least five matching symbols touching each other horizontally or vertically, and the larger the cluster, the bigger the prize. Winning symbols are removed and new ones fall in from above, so one spin can produce several wins in a row.

SlotCatalog also lists mega symbols up to 3x3, multipliers, wilds and free spins among the features. Single WILD symbols appear on the grid as gold diamonds and can join any cluster they touch.

The Paytable

The shark is the top symbol. Five sharks pay 1x the bet and eight pay 5x, then 9–10 pay 8x, 11–12 pay 20x and 13–14 pay 50x. A cluster of 15 or more sharks pays 900x, the largest single prize on the paytable.

The octopus pays from 0.75x for five up to 25x for 14, and 300x for 15 or more. The green fish starts at 0.5x and reaches 100x for the largest cluster, and the crab runs from 0.5x to 30x – nine crabs paid us €160, or 2x. The letters and the other low symbols pay less still.

Our win panel shows how small those low prizes are: five A, six Q or five K symbols paid €12 each, just 0.15x the bet. Nine Q paid €48, while nine A and ten K paid €64, so it takes a large cluster of letters to return even the stake.

The Lifebuoy Meter

In the top right corner is a meter drawn as a lifebuoy, counting up to 100. In our session it read 12 out of 100, then climbed to 26, 43 and 66 over the following spins before it showed MAX. It then stayed on that setting for the rest of that spin, and the giant WILD appeared while it was full.

Blood Trail and the Net

One of the features is announced with a large BLOOD TRAIL banner. A shark then swims up the side of the grid, leaving a red trail behind it, and the background changes to red for as long as the feature runs.

In another feature a fishing net packed with sea creatures is hauled across the grid, and once it has passed, a giant WILD block can sit in the middle of the reels, covering several positions at once. Both features play out on the grid itself rather than on a separate screen.

Two Spins, Step by Step

Two spins from our session show how the pieces fit together. The first opened with three small letter wins of €12 each, then the Blood Trail banner appeared and the win counter moved to €60. Further cascades took it to €804, and the lifebuoy meter climbed from 26 to 43 during the chain.

The second spin was bigger. The net crossed the grid with ten octopuses, nine crabs (€160) and ten K symbols (€64) in the win panel, and the counter stood at €3,028 with the meter on 66. Once the meter reached MAX, the giant WILD appeared, and the chain went on to €4,200 and then €5,000, the last step being 13 green fish for €800. That one spin paid more than 60 times the €80 bet.

What We Saw in Play

A cluster of 12 octopuses paid €800 (10x), and so did 13 green fish. Smaller clusters were worth €40 for five green fish, €48 for nine Q or eight K symbols and €64 for nine A symbols.

Across the cascade chains the win counter reached €804, €3,028, €4,200 and €5,000. The biggest total we saw was €9,508, around 119x the bet, with the balance standing at €20,640 afterwards. The game build shown was Hungry Bear version 1.0.2.

The Numbers to Keep in Mind

A 94% RTP is well below the market average, and SlotCatalog gives it as a range, so the version at a given casino may differ. In theory, 94% means that out of every €100 staked, €94 comes back to players over a very long run – around two points less than most modern slots, and a cost that adds up over a long session. High volatility means long runs of small cluster wins between the big cascades. The 3,000x ceiling is higher than the 900x shark prize, so the features have to do the rest of the work.
