Phoenix Queen: Hold ’n’ Link Overview

Phoenix Queen: Hold ’n’ Link is a five-reel, three-row video slot from NetGame with 30 fixed paylines. NetGame’s own game data gives an RTP of 96.26%, medium volatility, a maximum win of 3,000x the bet and a release date of 14 August 2024. The studio also publishes a hit frequency of 23.74%, and says the bonus feature triggers once every 150 spins on average.

It is part of NetGame’s long Hold ’n’ Link series, and the twist in this one is that the respin feature leads straight into a round of free spins. The figures below come from our own demo session at a bet of 10.

Cherry Blossoms and Mythical Birds

The reels stand in a red lacquered frame decorated with pink cherry blossoms, against a purple background with more blossoms drifting in the corners. The logo sits in the top-left corner, and the four cashpots run along the top of the grid in coloured boxes.

The Phoenix Queen herself is the Wild – a red-haired queen with a golden crown and a WILD banner. The other high symbols are a golden tree, a golden phoenix emblem and three birds in blue, green and purple. The low symbols are the card royals from 10 to A.

The Paytable

At our 10 bet the Wild is the top symbol, paying 175 for five (17.5x the bet), 75 for four and 15 for three. The golden tree pays 125, 50 and 12.50, and the golden phoenix 100, 37.50 and 12.50. The three birds share the same values: 50 for five, 17.50 for four and 5 for three.

The card royals all pay 25 for five, 12.50 for four and 2.50 for three. The Wild also substitutes for the regular symbols, and in our first capture three Queens on reels 1, 3 and 4 joined green birds to pay 25, or 2.5x the bet.

Triggering Hold ’n’ Link

The feature is triggered by the blue lotus FREE SPIN symbols. Each one carries a multiplier value – in our session we saw 2x, 3x, 5x and 15x – and landing six or more of them anywhere starts the Hold ’n’ Link bonus. Our trigger spin had six lotuses showing 2x, 3x and 5x across the grid.

The triggering symbols stay in place, the rest of the grid is cleared, and you get 3 respins. Every new lotus sticks and sets the respin counter back to three. The round ends when the respins run out or when all 15 positions are filled.

The Four Cashpots

A counter on the left shows how many lotuses you have collected, and a message above it tells you what the next target is. At our 10 bet the cashpots were:

• Maxi – 20,000 (2,000x)
• Major – 5,000 (500x)
• Minor – 250 (25x)
• Mini – 100 (10x)

With six lotuses the game told us to collect 12 to win the Mini, and with ten on the board the message changed to collect 15 to win the Maxi – so the Maxi takes a completely full grid. Our round ended on ten lotuses with no respins left, below the first cashpot.

The four prizes are far from evenly spaced. The Mini and Minor are small – 10x and 25x – while the Major jumps to 500x, twenty times the Minor, and the Maxi quadruples that again to 2,000x. The Maxi alone is two thirds of the game’s 3,000x maximum win. In practice this means most Hold ’n’ Link rounds are about the free spins that follow, and the big cashpots are the rare exception that decides a session.

From Respins to Free Spins

This is where Phoenix Queen differs from most Hold ’n’ Link games. When the respins end, every lotus you collected is moved to a panel on the left, and each lotus becomes one free spin. Our ten lotuses turned into 10 free spins, confirmed by the congratulations screen.

The multiplier printed on each lotus is applied to the wins of its own spin. Our panel held three 2x lotuses, three 3x, three 5x and one 15x, so each of the ten spins played with its own boost. The respin round therefore decides two things at once: how many free spins you get, and how big their multipliers are.

Inside the Free Spins

The free spins use the regular reels. On spin 8 of 10 in our round, two Queen Wilds on reels 1 and 3 lined up with the high symbols, and a win of 187.50 flashed on the screen – 18.75x the bet from a single spin. More Wilds in the free spins mean more chances for the multipliers to catch a real win.

Buy Bonus

The shopping-cart button to the left of the reels opens the Buy Bonus screen, which sells the Hold ’n’ Link bonus directly. At our 10 bet it cost 1,000, which is 100x the bet. The paytable confirms that Hold ’n’ Link can be activated from the buy menu.

NetGame puts the natural trigger rate at about one in every 150 spins. The buy price of 100x the bet is lower than that, but it is not a like-for-like comparison: the base-game spins on the way to a natural trigger also pay out, while the buy skips them. Whether it is worth it depends on how much of the session you want to spend in the bonus.

The Numbers Behind the Game

NetGame publishes more statistics than most studios. The hit frequency of 23.74% means that roughly one spin in four returns a win of some size. A big win arrives about once in 242 spins, according to the same data, and the Hold ’n’ Link feature about once in 150. Together with the medium volatility, those numbers describe a game where the base game keeps ticking over and the bonus comes around at a reasonable pace. NetGame also lists a maximum exposure of €250,000 for the game.

The base game relies heavily on the Wild. Five Queens pay 17.5x the bet, compared with 12.5x for the golden tree, 10x for the phoenix and only 5x for each of the birds. Because the Queen also substitutes, she both completes lines and pays the most when she forms her own. In our screenshots she often appeared on several reels at once, which is where the larger base-game wins come from.

Paylines and Rules

The 30 lines are shown in the paytable: three straight rows followed by V shapes, zigzags and step patterns. Wins pay from left to right along a line, and only the highest win on each line is paid. As usual, a malfunction voids all pays and plays, and the full game rules give further detail.
