Kraken's Hunger Overview

Kraken's Hunger is a pirate and sea-monster slot from BGaming, released on 22 August 2024. BGaming lists an RTP of 97.2%, medium-low volatility and a maximum win of 5,000x the bet, capped at €250,000. The grid can be played as 5x3, 5x4 or 5x5, with 5, 10 or 20 paylines.

A Grid in Chains

The reels float in a misty green sea, with a purple kraken on the game logo above them. What catches the eye first is the lower part of the grid: two extra rows sit below the regular 5x3 area, crossed out with chains. They are the 5x4 and 5x5 layouts, and they only come into play when the larger grid is active.

The symbols are ship’s wheels, pirate ships and the card letters from 10 to A in teal. The ships are special: each one carries its own cash value, such as 20.00, 30.00, 40.00 or 80.00.

Three Grid Sizes

BGaming describes the layout as selectable: 5x3 with 5 paylines, 5x4 with 10 and 5x5 with 20. In other words, every extra row doubles the number of lines, from 15 symbol positions on the smallest grid to 25 on the largest.

All of our base-game captures were played on the 5x3 layout, with the two chained rows below the reels still locked. That is also the configuration our data box refers to with its 5 betways.

A larger grid puts more lines in play on every spin, which gives each symbol more chances to connect, while the same 5,000x ceiling applies whichever layout you pick.

The lines screen shows all 20 paylines drawn on the full 5x5 grid, including straight rows, V shapes and zigzags. On the smaller layouts only some of them are in play, which is where the 5, 10 and 20-line options come from.

Base Game Wins

At a 10.00 bet, three ship’s wheels on a line paid 20.00 (2x). At 14.00, a line of Qs paid 60.00 (4.3x). A spin with five ships worth 20.00 to 80.00 paid 70.00.

The most striking capture showed a 3x3 block of ships on the first three reels, with values of 20.00, 30.00, 40.00 and 80.00 – 290.00 in total on the board. BGaming explains that the ships pay their accumulated amounts during the free spins when they land together with wilds, so a board like that shows what the feature is aiming for.

Ship Values

The ships are the symbol to watch. In our captures their values ranged from 20.00 to 80.00 at a 10.00 to 14.00 bet – roughly 2x to 8x the stake per ship. In the base game they simply sit on the reels and pay when they form a line; their real job starts in the free spins.

There, according to BGaming, a ship that lands together with wilds pays the amount it has accumulated. Nine ships in one block, like the 290.00 board in our session, show how much can be waiting on the reels when the wilds arrive.

Chance x2

A Chance x2 button on the left raises the chance of triggering the free spins. It adds 4.00 to a 10.00 bet, which is why several of our captures show a total bet of 14.00 – a 40% surcharge for better odds of reaching the feature.

Free Spins

Bonus symbols – bags marked BONUS – trigger the free spins. According to BGaming, 3 Bonus symbols give 10 free spins, 4 give 15 and 5 give 20. Our round started with three of them and announced 10 free spins on a screen with the kraken wrapped around a ship’s mast.

Inside the round, wilds are collected. BGaming says that every 4th wild gives 10 extra free spins together with a multiplier: first x2, then x3 and finally x10. Combined with the ship values, that ladder is where the 5,000x maximum comes from.

Buying the Bonus

The Buy Bonus chest on the left sends you straight into the free spins. At a 10.00 bet it cost 1,200.00, and at 5.00 the confirmation window showed 600.00 – 120x the bet in both cases. After the purchase, the chest changes to “Bonus Active 600.00”, and the next spin lands the Bonus symbols.

Our Session in Numbers

We played the base game at 10.00 and, with Chance x2 switched on, at 14.00. Across those captures the balance ranged between 860 and 1,043 FUN, with single wins of 20.00 to 70.00.
