How we rate games

Every slot is scored on the same four criteria, using the game's published data: RTP (40%), maximum win potential (25%), bonus features described in our review (30%) and how recent the release is (5%). Our editors can adjust a score after playing the game. Missing data counts as neutral. The score reflects the game's numbers and features, not your chances of winning; slots are games of chance, so please play responsibly.

Fishin' Bear Overview

Fishin' Bear is a fishing slot from Booongo, the studio that now publishes as 3 Oaks Gaming. It launched as an exclusive on 1 May 2024 and went on wide release on 9 May. It plays on 5 reels and 3 rows with 25 fixed paylines.

SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 96.5%, medium volatility and a maximum win of 2,500x the bet, with bets from $0.10 to $80. The numbers below come from our demo session, played at bets of 10 and 15.

A Bear in a Rubber Boat

The game takes place on a mountain lake. A cheerful brown bear in a green fishing vest sits in an orange rubber boat above the reels, rod in hand, and throws his arms up when a big win lands. The reels themselves are under water, with fish, boots and fishing gear drifting past.

The premium symbols are a small motorboat, a tackle box, a pair of green wellingtons and a fishing reel, and the low symbols are the card ranks from 9 to A. The fish are special: each carries a cash value or a jackpot label, and the bear is the only symbol that can collect them.

The controls sit on the right: a large green spin button, a turbo button marked “hold for turbo” and an autoplay button, with the bet selector at the bottom. The information button opens the nine-page rules, and a separate “common rules” page covers the general terms.

The Paytable

At a bet of 10 the motorboat pays 30.00 for five, 10.00 for four and 6.00 for three – 3x the stake for a full line. The tackle box pays 25/6/3, the wellingtons 20/5/3 and the fishing reel 15/4/3.

Those figures are modest, which is typical for a collect-style game with 25 lines. The regular lines keep small wins coming; the fish and the bear carry the real value.

The Bear Collects the Fish

When the bear lands together with fish, he collects every fish value on the screen. In one base-game spin at a bet of 15, two fish worth 15.00 each and a MINI fish landed with the bear, and he collected 180.00 – 12x the bet, most of it from the Mini jackpot.

Another spin paid 195.00 (13x) as the bear gathered fish from across the grid. A plain line win looked very different: a screen full of fishing reels paid 99.00 (6.6x).

The last page of the rules shows all 25 win lines as small grids: the three straight rows, V shapes, zigzags and a few lines that step up and down across the middle. Wins pay from the leftmost reel, and the full rules run to nine pages, from the paytable to the line diagrams.

With 25 lines and a 3-row grid, most spins that land three matching symbols anywhere on the first reels pay something, which is why the line wins are small but frequent.

Four Fixed Jackpots

The jackpot panels on the left scale with the bet. At a bet of 10 they read MINI 100, MINOR 200, MAJOR 500 and GRAND 10,000 – 10x, 20x, 50x and 1,000x the stake. At a bet of 15 the same panels showed 150, 300, 750 and 15,000.

Jackpots arrive on fish symbols, so they only pay out when the bear collects them. The Grand alone accounts for 1,000x of the 2,500x maximum.

The jackpot labels ride on special fish. In our captures a green fish marked MINI appeared on reel 4 in one spin and on reel 3 in another, and behind the buy screen the grid showed fish marked GRAND and MINOR as well. A jackpot fish on its own pays nothing – it waits for a bear, like every other fish.

That is what made the 180.00 collection so clear: the two cash fish added 30.00, and the Mini fish added the remaining 150.00, exactly the Mini value at a bet of 15.

Free Spins

The Free Spins award 8 or 16 random free spins; a short selection screen picks one of the two numbers before the round starts. In the round, reel 5 is marked STICKY. SlotCatalog describes the rule as sticky fish on reel 5, and in our captures fish kept appearing there while bears on the other reels collected the grid.

That makes reel 5 the engine of the round: a fish that stays there can be counted again by every later bear, so a round that fills reel 5 early has more to collect.

Our Free Spins Round

We bought the round at a bet of 10 and landed 8 free spins. After two spins the total stood at 192.00, with a bear collecting a screen of fish worth 10 and 20 each. By spin 6 of 8 the grid was covered with fish worth 10 to 50 and the total had reached 521.29 – about 52x the bet, with two spins still to play.

Buying the Bonus

The Buy button on the left takes you straight into the Free Spins. At a bet of 10 it cost 750.00, and at 15 it showed 1,125.00 – 75x the bet in both cases, as SlotCatalog also states. The buy is not available in every market; SlotCatalog notes that it is excluded for UK players.

Our bought round was well on the way to recovering its price after six of eight spins, which is a fair picture of how the sticky reel works: steady additions rather than one sudden jump.

Following the Balance

The balance on screen tells the story of the bought round. It started at 1,000.00, dropped to 250.00 after the 750.00 purchase, stood at 442.00 after the second free spin and at 771.29 after the sixth. Each step matches the running total in the Free Spins panel, so none of the round’s value was paid outside the collections we could see.

In the base game the balance moved in smaller steps: from 874.00 to 1,084.00 and then 1,244.50 over three spins with fish collections at a bet of 15.

The Numbers to Keep in Mind

A 96.5% return is slightly above the market average, and medium volatility means the game pays small wins often and saves its bigger results for the fish collections. The 2,500x maximum is moderate; the Grand jackpot fish is the largest single piece of it.

Who Should Play It

Fishin' Bear suits players who enjoy the collect mechanic popular in fishing slots. The bear-and-fish system is easy to follow, the jackpots are always on screen, and the sticky reel gives the free spins a clear goal.
