Wolf Power Megaways is the fifth Megaways slot to emerge from the Playson workshop, and we are noticing a definite trend forming here. Aside from The Fruit Megaways, all have been reworked versions of previous games. We could spit ball as to why Playson has adopted this approach – convenience, quick turnaround time, giving fans what they want, lack of ideas, they just really like the original? The guess list goes on. The thing is, Wolf Power Megaways isn’t one of those games we particularly want to spend a whole lot of time thinking about, so why don’t we just head on in and reveal what it can do.

The original game was called Wolf Power: Hold and Win, so that should give you a good idea of what to expect in Wolf Power Megaways. If you are thinking it’ll be one of those outdoor nature type slots full of wild animals and a streak respin bonus round, pat yourself on the back, you have pretty much nailed it. The two games share much of the same symbols and visuals, including a moody moonlit night, bathing the great outdoors in cool blue tones. It looks okay, nothing out of the ordinary, with equally unremarkable gameplay to match.

The main difference so far is that the game is played on a dynamic Megaways game grid, with 6 reels holding 2-6 symbols each. This creates varying numbers of ways to win on every spin, up to 46,656 at the most. Step one is selecting an appropriate stake, with Wolf Power Megaways providing bets of 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, or you can cut straight to the streak respin bonus round by clicking the cart icon on the left. A medium/high volatile game, the RTP was not available at the time of testing, which is generally not a good sign. Overall, the lack of transparency was not very encouraging and should be considered a warning sign.

Players collect coins in the base game and free spins when at least three matching symbols land left to right from the first reel onwards. Doing so with the J-A symbols pays out 1x the bet for six of a kind, increasing to 5-20x your stake for six owls, mountain goats, eagles, or bears. Wolf wilds pay more, up to 50 times your stake for five of a kind, while also replacing any normal symbol to complete winning ways.

Wolf Power Megaways: Slot Features

Wolf Power Megaways comes with the same two bonus features found in the original game – free spins with full reel wilds and a streak respin round with jackpots.

Free Spins

The mountain in the moonlight symbol is the scatter, and landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 of them at once awards 10, 15, 20, or 25 free spins. In free spins, all wild symbols expand to cover the whole reel when they hit.

Bonus Game

Two other symbols appear on the reels. These are the Bonus symbol and the Power symbol. Landing any combination of 6 or more of them triggers the bonus game. The triggering symbols are locked in place while all other symbols vanish from the reels – 3 respins are granted at the start of the round, and any new Power or Bonus symbols that land, lock in place, resetting spins back to 3.

Another symbol may land in the bonus round, which is called the Booster. When a Booster lands, it adds an additional position to its reel, up to 6 high at the most, and adds +1 to the applicable reel multiplier, which starts on x1. When spins run out, Bonus symbol values are increased by any respective reel multiplier and paid. Also, players are awarded a jackpot depending on how many Power symbols are in view – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Power symbols pays out 5x, 20x, 50x, 150x, 500x, or 2,000x the bet, respectively.

Buy Bonus

If available, players can buy the respins bonus round. Pop it in the basket and shell out 100x the bet to land the required number of Bonus or Power symbols.

Wolf Power Megaways: Slot Verdict

After the last few Playson Megaways releases, and some cursory research on Wolf Power Megaways, we weren’t exactly rearing to put the game through its paces. Sadly, a playthrough of Wolf Power Megaways only confirmed our suspicions. There just wasn’t anything here to get excited about. Same old wildlife visuals, same old features, same old everything. About the only thing evoking any sort of emotional response was the misplaced looking shopping cart bonus buy button (what is this, Amazon?), and it wasn’t a positive one.

A word on the gameplay then, which is also mixed. If we are being upbeat, let’s say that anyone looking for another one of these wildlife games built around moons, wolves, and a jackpot filled respins bonus game, then okay, Wolf Power Megaways is as good as many others. It’s got full reel wild free spins, too, so that’s something. However, the studio hasn’t exactly pushed Megaways or advanced the mechanic in any way. On the contrary, while Wolf Power Megaways is a bigger game than the original, it’s far from being a paradigm shift, making us wonder why Playson bothered when the result is so unimaginatively average.

It seems Playson are content churning out these mediocre Megaways remakes, and we presume there must be someone out there playing them. As an increasing number of developers license Megaways, adding their contributions to the ever-growing pile, it is getting harder and harder to stand out. If Wolf Power Megaways is anything to go by, it doesn’t feel like Playson is attempting to.
