Theme and Graphics

Two Rules Worth Reading

The rules page is unusually explicit, and two lines on it are worth quoting because both are commonly misread.

All combinations are paid from left to right on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. Standard, but it rules out the right-to-left payments some studios offer.

If a line pays more than one win, the highest win is paid. This is the within-line rule: where a single payline contains two possible combinations, only the better one counts. It does not mean that only one line pays per spin – several lines regularly pay together, and the demo shows exactly that.

A third line restricts the wild: it only appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. So the wild can never start a combination, since combinations must begin on reel one. Its entire job is to complete and extend, never to initiate.

The Wild in Practice

The demo shows the wild doing what that restriction implies. One board carries three of her stacked down the middle reel, converting a run of royals into a 12.00 win – 1.2 times the stake. Another has her filling the whole fifth reel for a 42.00 result, or 4.2x.

That second board is instructive: a full reel of wild on a twenty-five-line game, and the result was four times the bet. It is a fair illustration of what a 4x paytable ceiling on the royals does to even a very good board.

What the Base Game Pays

In multiples that is 0.8x, 1.2x, 1.8x, 2x, 4.2x and 6x. The largest of them – a board of four green serpents plus a wild – came in at six times the bet, half of what five headdresses would pay.

The balance moves accordingly, drifting between 220 and 936 across the captures. Nothing in the base game is dramatic, which is the point: the money is elsewhere.

It is worth pausing on the 8.00 result. The board carries five turquoise mosaic masks, three across the top row and two more below, with a serpent among them – and the four-of-a-kind rung for that symbol pays exactly 8.00. A board that looks busy, and four fifths of the stake comes back. On a flat paytable, appearances mislead more than usual.

The Azteca Collect Symbols

The rules page lists six special symbols that the wild cannot substitute for, each with its own label: BONUS, PLUS, EXPAND, MULTIPLIER, COLLECT and FREE SPIN.
