Chinese Zombie Overview

Chinese Zombie is a KA Gaming slot on a five-by-three grid with 30 paylines, built on the jiangshi of Chinese folklore – the hopping corpse in Qing-dynasty robes, kept at bay by a paper talisman.

Its paytable does something worth noticing: the scatter is the best-paying symbol in the game, at nearly double what the top regular symbol returns.

Theme and Graphics

The setting is a riverside gorge in daylight – green cliffs, a waterfall on the right, koi swimming in the shallows – with the reels framed by the swept eaves and blue-tiled roof of a temple gate. It is a much gentler scene than the subject suggests.

The symbols are the tools of a Taoist exorcist rather than the monster itself: a wooden sword, a bagua mirror, a brass hand bell, a rolled talisman with red script, and a black-and-gold hat. The Paytable

Now the row that changes the picture. The scatter – the jiangshi himself, in a red hat with a talisman across his forehead – pays 4,500.00 for five, 1,500.00 for four and 300.00 for three.

Against the 150.00 bet that is 30x, 10x and 2x. Thirty times the stake is almost double the gold hat’s 16.7x, and it arrives without needing a payline: scatters pay from anywhere on the grid.

That inversion matters. On most slots the scatter awards a round and pays a token amount; here it is simultaneously the trigger and the single most valuable thing on the board. A spin with four scatters is worth more than a complete line of the best regular symbol.

The demo catches two scatters on the grid in a couple of captures – one on the second reel and one on the fourth – with the game marking each in plain text beneath the tile.

The Two Wilds

The game runs two wild portraits rather than one: a female figure in a red bridal headdress trailing white hair, and a blue-faced boy in a Qing cap. Both are marked WILD.

The feature list attaches two behaviours to them that the base game does not show: the wilds expand, and one is guaranteed in every free spin. On a thirty-line grid an expanding wild converts a whole column, which is a considerably larger event than the four separate tiles in that capture.

The upside is concentrated in two places, and they are the same place twice over. The scatter pays 30x and opens the round; inside the round a wild is guaranteed and expands. Everything the game has to offer runs through those two symbols.

It is a well-drawn, unhurried game with better art direction than the theme required, and the decision to put the scatter at the top of the paytable is a genuinely unusual one that works in the player’s favour.
